In a small wooden cottage known as Peaceful Woodland Cottage, five members of a clan small electric appliances - a toaster, a radio, a lamp stand named 'Lampy', an electric blanket named 'Blanky' and a vacuum cleaner named 'Kirby' - await the return of a young boy named Rob (whom they refer to as the Master) who used to vacation at the cottage with his family, but the family has not come by in many years. While the film received a limited theatrical release, The Brave Little Toaster received positive reviews and was popular on home video and was followed by two sequels, which are The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars and The Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue. John Lasseter, then employed at Disney, wanted to do a CGI film based on that, but it was turned down and he was terminated the following year. The rights were acquired by Disney in 1982.

Many CalArts graduates, including the original members of Pixar Animation Studios, were involved with this film. The film was produced by Hyperion Animation, along with The Kushner-Locke Company.
